Marey Carey, whose real name is Mary Ellen Cook, was born in Cleveland, Ohio to a mother who suffered from schizophrenia and a father who had cerebral palsy. She was raised by her grandparents starting when she was three months old; eventually they legally adopted her. Carey has studied ballet and theatre, the latter at Florida Atlantic University. When her grandmother became ill, Carey began her career as an exotic dancer. When she realized that "feature dancers" make much more money, she moved to Los Angeles to start her career in porn, the idea being that she would develop a fan base and have a large draw when she would dance live. Since landing her first job with Playboy TV she has been in over 80 adult films. However, after her mother jumped off of a four-story building while Carey was on VH1's Celebrity Rehab, she has vowed to never make another adult film again, though she does still dance to make money to support her mother's health. Carey is also known for her run for governor of California in the 2003 recall election that put Arnold Shwarzenegger in office. She placed tenth in voting out of 135 candidates. Her platform included taxing breast implants, making lap dances tax-deductable, and a proposed "Porn for Pistols" exchange program. Since running, she has been featured on several political talk shows and has said that she wishes to win a major party nomination to run for president of the United States.
